Piano Interpretations

It would be enough if they could no longer recognize their own grey, dull faces, if they felt that for a moment they had been dreaming of an imaginary country, that’s to say, one that can’t be found on the map.

— C. Debussy, Letter to Paul Dukas

G. Fauré: Nocturne No.13 in B minor, Op.119

This is the last piece of piano solo work written by Fauré. Living outside of the French Romanticism & Impressionism idiom, the piece reveals the most secret and intimate territory of the master in his late years, through the lens of its sheer, austere beauty.

J.S. Bach: Prelude and Fugue in B minor, from WTC Book I, BWV 869

If there is a plot line in Well-Tempered Clavier, the prelude and fugue in B minor is the concluding chapter that's full of contemplation and transcendence. The fugue subject stepped through all 12 tones... the endless staircase... flashback of life and joy...

P. Hindemith: Fugue in G, from Ludus Tonalis

Written in 1942, the Neoclassism keyboard collection Ludus Tonalis (Game of Tones) is one of the most successful homage to Bach's WTC in 20 century. A brief, 3-voices fugue in G, blends the baroque form and modernism with incredible wit.

M. Ravel: Jeux D'eau

Jeux D'eau, written by young Ravel in his Conservatoire years, charms us with astonishing colorful display of water splashing on the piano. "A river god laughing at the water that tickles him."
